16-Month-Old Boy Needs Surgery for Rare Condition that Caused His Tongue to Double in Size
Just 16 months old, Baker Roth has spent much of his life in the hospital. The toddler was born with a rare condition called Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome, which causes parts of the body to grow at faster rates — and frequently leads to cancerous and noncancerous tumors.
Because of his condition, Roth developed hepatoblastoma, a rare childhood liver cancer. At 10 months old he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove the cancerous tumor in his liver. Diagnosed in July, he was in remission by October.
RELATED: Mom Is Raising Awareness Around Her Toddler's Rare Skin Condition
“Thank you all so much for the continued prayers, love and support,” his mom, Faith, wrote on the GoFundMe page the family set up to help with his extensive medical bills. “We are going to enjoy a week of freedom, and then check back in for our maintenance chemo. We will have two rounds [of chemo] then [a] scan and then we will be ringing that cancer free bell!!!”

Baker Roth/GoFundMe
In early December, Faith said that Baker was in remission. Unfortunately, two days before Christmas their family got news that Baker’s tumor markers are up, which could mean the cancer is back. Faith said he would undergo testing after the holiday to assess the issue.
“Unfortunately we got that phone call you don’t want to get after getting our labs done last week,” she wrote on Sunday. “We are believing that it could possibly be liver regeneration causing Baker’s tumor marker to go up more than it should.”
Baker also has more surgery in his future — because of Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome, his tongue is double the normal size and restricts Baker from speaking clearly or eating solid foods. He has a trach tube in his throat to help him breathe, but his parents hope that tongue reduction surgery will solve the issue.
Faith explained in an update on their GoFundMe page in early December that Baker has a long way to go.
“We still have a tongue reduction in January, hospitalization to have the trach removed, mickey button removal [for a feeding tube] and one last abdominal surgery in the near future,” she said.

Baker Roth/GoFundMe
But Faith said that she’s feeling hopeful.
“We are so appreciative of all of our family and friends — some we know, and some whom we don’t know — for seeing us through this difficult time of our lives,” she said. “There is a light at the end of the tunnel, however we still have a little ways to go. Baker is strong as ever.”

Do Cannabis-Infused Beauty Products Actually Work? Everything You Need to Know
[brightcove:5661441482001 default]
Chances are, you've probably started to notice cannabidiol hemp oil, or CBD hemp oil, popping up as an ingredient in beauty products such as body lotion and facial oil. While it's definitely the buzzy beauty ingredient of the moment, a fad this is not: CBD-infused beauty products have been growing in popularity, with entire brands now dedicated to the healing properties CBD hemp oil has when used topically. But there are still a lot of misconceptions about CBD-infused beauty products, so we went to the experts to get some answers.
First, the big question you're wondering: CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning you're not going to get high from using any of these products. CBD hemp oil is sourced from hemp with lower levels of THC than marijuana, (which is responsible for altered mental state) and high levels of CBD. It's also a rich source of fatty acids and other nutrients that benefit your skin, says Francesca Fusco, MD, a dermatologist based in New York City. "Studies have shown it can improve reduced barrier function, improve hydration, minimize moisture loss, and decrease inflammation," she explains.
RELATED: What to Know About CBD Oil and Chronic Pain
The best CBD oil beauty products
Skincare brands are catching on to the benefits. If you're looking for something to address dryness, CBD for Life Pure CBD Hand and Body Massage Lotion ($22; cbdlife.us) is an all-star. On your face, try Mad Hippie Antioxidant Facial Oil ($25; amazon.com), which contains hemp seed extract for a healthy glow along with other skin-loving ingredients like argan oil and vitamin E. The popular skincare brand Kiehl's even recently announced that they will be launching a Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Herbal Concentrate early next year to help fight skin imperfections like redness ($49, available for preorder now on kiehls.com).
If you're feeling sore after a workout or have muscle aches, try Lord Jones Pure CBD Pain & Wellness Formula Body Lotion ($50; sephora.com) or soak in a relaxing bath with Life Elements Bliss Bath Balm ($14; lifeelements.com).
You can also find it in makeup products, such as Milk Makeup KUSH High Volume Mascara ($24; sephora.com); because cannabis is so rich in omega fatty acids, it makes for a super conditioning ingredient in mascara. There's even a hair care line called EMERA that's packed with CBD oil: We love the EMERA Nourishing CBD Detangler Plus ($25; emerahair.com).
Many of these products are geared towards CBD oil's anti-inflammatory benefits because "the primary receptor for CBD (CB2) is found on immune cells," which is where inflammation takes place, notes Adam Friedman, MD, a dermatologist in Washington D.C. This is major, because many skin conditions are connected to inflammation, which is why there are so many conversations about the power of CBD in the beauty industry right now.
More research on CBD oil and its benefits is needed, but Dr. Friedman points out that the ingredient's ability to regulate cell growth, reduce inflammation, and stimulate important fats in the skin and sebaceous glands could help inform treatments for other skin issues, such as dry skin, psoriasis, and eczema.
According to Dr. Friedman, cannabis beauty products are certainly worth a try. He reiterates that the benefits are "strongly supported by several pilot studies," not to mention that many users swear by them.

The Moisturizer Adele, Victoria Beckham, and Julia Roberts Are Obsessed With
This article originally appeared on InStyle.com.
Aside from being insanely-talented women in each of their respective fields, Adele, Victoria Beckham, and Julia Roberts all have another aspect in common—you can find Weleda's Skin Food stashed in each of their makeup bags.
[brightcove:5370089730001 default]
Formulated with a nourishing blend of calendula, chamomile, pansy, and sweet almond oil, this all-natural blend harnesses the power of plant extracts to balance your skin's moisture levels, and has gained quite the celebrity following. Even pro makeup artists will use it as a face cream on their star clients, and we hear Rihanna has previously requested a tube or two with her manicurist prior to getting lacquered up.
Weleda Skin Food Skin Cream
To buy: $13; amazon.com and dermstore.com
The uber-rich cream can be used anywhere your skin feels dry—you can pretty much slather your entire body in the stuff, which isn't hard to do. Try applying a tiny dollop to chapped lips, or to rough heels to instantly soften callouses. The all-natural ingredients are gentle enough to be used on babies, but are effective enough to calm any weather-triggered irritation, like windburn.
RELATED: The Best Lip Masks for Fuller, Younger-Looking Lips
Roberts in particular loves how it works as a hand cream. "I put it on my hands after I wash the dishes, and wind up putting it on my elbows and feet," she previously told InStyle. "Before you know it, I've squeezed this poor little green tube into a twist." Seriously, it's that good.

5 Myths and Facts About Your Sagging Face
Let's face it: Sagging's only cute if you're a Shar Pei. For most of us, our jangly jowls and hanging cheeks are a source of chagrin as we age. Here, five myths and facts about facial sagging, plus ways to stop the droop:
Running causes your face to sag
FALSE. Sagging skin is due to two age-related reasons: loss of collagen, which gives skin its elasticity, and loss of facial fat, the absence of which causes skin to droop. While your whole body bounces up and down while you're jogging, it's highly unlikely that you're jostling around enough to damage collagen, points out Las Vegas-based plastic surgeon Michael Edwards, MD, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
A more likely cause? Long hours exercising outdoors equals more UV exposure, which over time breaks collagen down. Make sure you slather up with plenty of sunscreen before venturing outside, even in colder weather.
RELATED: The Best Over-the-Counter Retinol Creams, According to Dermatologists
Sleeping on your stomach causes sagging
FALSE. Your sleep position won't actually cause sagging, but it can lead to sleep wrinkles: those creases and fine lines you see each AM in your bathroom mirror. They're caused by your pillow tugging at delicate facial skin as you sleep. When you're younger, it's not an issue, as fresh, elastic skin bounces back easily, but as you age, skin becomes less resilient and can settle into these lines. Your best way to avoid this is to sleep on your back, says Dr. Edwards.
But if you're a die hard tummy sleeper or flip flop through the night (some studies have found sleepers switch positions 11 times a night on average) you can try the Night Pillow ($150; amazon.com). This specially formulated pillow helps minimize wrinkles while you sleep thanks to its gentle fabric.
RELATED: Sleep on This: Our Top Pillow Picks
You can do facial exercises to reduce skin sagging
TRUE. But with a catch. They increase the size of facial muscles, which, while theoretically taking away some of the slacking skin, also causes expression lines, points out Dr. Edwards. So while a few workout moves might help relieve basset hound-like eyes, they'll probably also worsen crow's feet. If you're not opposed to getting some help from a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, you may get better results from Botox.
RELATED: 7 Genius Ways to Prevent Wrinkles While You Sleep
Weight loss causes skin sagging
TRUE. When you gain weight, the skin on your face stretches to go along with your extra padding, just like it does everywhere else. But if you've finally lost it, you may notice that you're sporting under eye bags and a slack jaw. As you age and your skin loses elasticity, when you stretch it out it won't bounce back the same way it did when you were younger, explains Dr. Edwards. But don't despair: products like Retin-A can help, as can injectable fillers such as Voluma.
There are products that may help fight sagging skin
TRUE. You can slow down the sag from the outside in: Try topical products like over-the-counter retinols (our pick: Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream) or prescription retinoids, which boost collagen production, and vitamin C serums (we love Sunday Riley C.E.O. Rapid Flash Brightening Serum), which help restore elasticity, advises Dr. Edwards. In one study, a daily supplement of pycnogenol, a French pine bark extract, increased skin elasticity and hydration and increased production of hyaluronic acid, a skin plumping ingredient, by 44%, according to a 2012 German study (which was funded by the maker of the raw material used in the supplements).

What Is Candy Corn Actually Made Of?
from Food - Health.com https://ift.tt/2SuY7M6
This $9 Brush Takes the Pain Out of Detangling Wet Hair
What is worse than getting out of the shower and having to spend 10 minutes painfully yanking through the snarly bird's nest on your head? Nothing. The answer is nothing. (OK, some things, but practically nothing.) I have long, thick, hard-to-manage locks, so this is a particularly sensitive topic for me. But I've found the fix: the Wet Brush.
Actually, my best friend found it. While visiting me last weekend, she got all excited and skipped over to her suitcase because she had "a surprise you're going to love!" She then unveiled the most underwhelming pink, plastic hair brush I've ever seen. I was too quick to judge its basic appearance because this thing lived up to its name. The detangling brush could comb through my knotted post-shower strands very quickly and without tugging on my scalp, leaving my hair silky smooth. It also worked just as well working through my dry bed-head hair the next morning. The power lies in the thin, "IntelliFlex" bristles that can bend and wiggle through tangles without tugging or causing damage.
[brightcove:4821494210001 default]
I bought my own immediately (it's only $9 on amazon.com), and I now notice an obvious difference when I happen to pick up my icky, evil old brush. Another hack? Use it in the shower with conditioner for an even silkier mane when you blow dry. Moms out there, this beauty steal could be a lifesaver for anyone who struggles combing their child's hair sans tears.
The Wet Brush comes in a few different shapes and sizes, including a full-size paddle option ($10; amazon.com), as well as a Wet Brush "Squirt" ($7; amazon.com) that is adorable and mini and perfect for your purse or gym bag. You're welcome!

Does Dry Brushing Really Reduce Cellulite and Help You Look Younger?
[brightcove:5474328532001 default]
There's always a new skin trend popping up rumored to vanish wrinkles, smooth dimples and zap cellulite. But most turn out to be temporary tricks and, more often than not, too good to be true. Cue dry brushing—is it really worth the hype?
Dry brushing, as the term suggests, quite literally entails brushing your bare skin—thighs, butt, arms, you name it—with a soft-bristled brush in order to give skin a fresher, smoother appearance. While there is scant scientific research to back up claims that it cures cellulite, it has some cosmetic benefits, explains Mona Gohara, MD, a dermatologist at the Yale School of Medicine—although they are fleeting at best.
The motion improves circulation and helps flush waste and toxins by stimulating the lymphatic system, explains Dr. Gohara, who is also a fellow of American Academy of Dermatology. "Doing all of that can certainly parlay into skin radiance and glow and a plumper appearance."
Another power of dry brushing is the element of exfoliation, she adds. While exfoliating "won't shave off 20 years," Dr. Gohara says, it helps remove dry, dead skin cells and makes your derm more susceptible to moisture and hydration. "Exfoliation really is a tenant of healthy, younger-looking skin."
RELATED: The Best Retinol Creams You Can Buy Without a Prescription
How to dry brush properly
Using a brush made with natural, ultra-fine bristles, run the brush over your bare skin in gentle, circular motions. It's best to do it before you shower; both your skin and the brush should be dry. "I generally recommend doing it once a week, one pass per body part," Dr. Gohara adds.
The brush makes all the difference; stiff or synthetic bristles can cause irritation or even microscopic cuts. "You should use a brush that would be safe even on a baby's skin," Dr. Gohara recommends.
You should avoid dry brushing if you have very sensitive skin, acne, or a condition like rosacea or eczema. "There's a good chance any type of sensitive skin will react to this type of stimulation," she says.
You may notice plump, fresh skin for a couple of hours. "Think about it," Dr. Gohara explains, "when we go for a jog, our hearts are pumping blood to our organs, our face gets flushed, and then it fades away. Or imagine what happens when you pinch your cheeks."
The bottom line: Dry brushing can act as a short-lived fix to energize your skin. But is it a permanent anti-aging solution for all lumps and bumps? "Absolutely not," she says. "All of us would be scrubbing ourselves with brushes constantly, every day."

The One Healthy Thing Fitness Experts Always Do on Thanksgiving Day
[brightcove:5159339518001 default]
Who doesn't love Thanksgiving—one of the few days of the year when you can put aside your usual healthy habits and pig out with no shame or judgment?
While we're totally on board with holiday indulgence, it's not a bad idea to try to do at least one food- or fitness-related move to keep your energy high, your mood bright, and successfully resist the urge to veg out on the couch after dinner nursing a monster food baby. To give you some inspiration, we asked fitness influencers, nutritionists, and Health staffers to tell us one thing they always do for mind-body health on Turkey Day.

“I get out on the road early for a run before the festivities begin. I know later I most likely won’t have the time or energy. Running is also my 'me' time; on a day of giving thanks, it’s important to thank yourself for all you do! Having the ability to move, breathe, and share life with others makes me feel even more grateful. The crisp fall air and smell of fallen leaves doesn’t hurt in setting the mood either.”
—Rebecca Kennedy, New York based–fitness trainer
“I love taking recipes from Pinterest that look super yummy and find ways to make them healthier with organic and natural ingredients. It's fun because it's something the whole family can be part of. We're all cooking and being creative, and healthy!”
—Cassey Ho, fitness influencer and founder of Blogilates
“I always try to maintain a physical yoga practice during the holidays, even if it mean unrolling my mat in the one sliver of space that’s not occupied by a family member. It always helps me stay centered during what can be a very emotionally difficult time of the year and it helps validate my requisite gluttonous holiday meal choices. Plus, yogic twists make digestion of rich holiday food much easier.”
—Jessamyn Stanley, yogi and author of Every Body Yoga
“On Thanksgiving I pay close attention to my mind-body connection. It doesn't feel good to deprive myself, and it doesn't feel good to be stuffed and sluggish, so I make choices that allow me to feel both satisfied and energized simultaneously. This balance feels just right, both mentally and physically, and it's freeing to make choices motivated by feeling well, rather than numbers, rules, shoulds, or guilt!"
—Cynthia Sass, RD, Health contributing nutrition editor

“I just make sure to get a run in, walk before and after eating, and then also pace myself between the main course and dessert. I'm never one to wildly indulge and I think if you give yourself a bit of a break between the main course and dessert it allows you some time to spend with your family, in addition to being actually able to savor the deliciousness of the sweets.”
—Joe Holder, Nike master trainer
“Our Thanksgiving Day tradition (besides enjoying the meal) always includes exercise: We all go for a hike in the morning, followed by a stretching session, usually led by my daughter [fitness blogger and author] Katie, and then after the meal we put on loud music and dance around the house, inside and out! It’s a great way to keep your energy up and connect with the family!”
—Denise Austin, fitness expert and creator of LifeFit
“This Thanksgiving, I’ll be sneaking in an infrared sauna session. It’s a 30-minute sweat, so if I’m cooking all day and don’t have time to get my ass to the gym, it’s easy. And a good sweat definitely helps me mentally prepare for family dynamics!”
—Hannah Bronfman, DJ and founder of HBFIT
"Every year on Thanksgiving morning, my dad, brothers, husband and I run in our town's local road race together. My dad always insists on leaving unnecessarily early to get a parking spot and it's always freezing (so, I'm always kind of dreading it), but then I feel extra virtuous when it's time to head home and start digging into the appetizers."
—Kathleen Felton, senior digital editor

“I always try to go for a run before the meal, but no matter my exercise plans, my family and I try to do something active together during the day. Some years, with a big crowd, that's been a casual touch football game. Other times, it's just a walk around the block. Anything to get moving and help avoid a total food coma!”
—Sarah Klein, senior editor at Health
“Every year, I watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from a friend's house that overlooks the parade route. Her apartment is about a two-mile walk from my house, and I always walk there and back to fit some activity in before I feast later on. A brisk walk is the best way to wake up on one of my favorite days of the year!”

7 All-Natural Deodorants That Actually Work
Deodorant is the last thing I think about in the morning—and the first thing I worry about after a sweaty workout. I'm a newbie runner and am prepping for my first 5K, and since I often do my training runs during my lunch break, I really need a deodorant that stands up to sweat and smell.
I've been on a rocky road to finding the perfect deodorant; some in the past have left me with red rashes and irritation post-shaving. Although my go-to standard, Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant Deodorant ($5; amazon.com), has been keeping me dry and B.O.-free for years, I've been curious about all-natural deodorants—but worried they wouldn't stand up to stink.
Plus, even though a link between deodorant chemicals and breast cancer hasn't been proven, I still like the idea of having an all-natural option, especially because it's something that stays on your skin all day.
I tried 25 types of all-natural deodorant during my lunch-break workouts. Through trial-and-error (and many 5K runs), these are my top picks for all-natural deodorants.
Schmidt's Bergamot + Lime Deodorant
To buy: $10; amazon.com
This stick is made with coconut oil and shea butter, so it glides on smoothly. I also tested a version you can rub into your underarms with your fingers, but if given the choice, I would pick the stick version. It absorbed quickly and left no residue on my clothes. Plus, if you're not into scents, Schmidt's also has a fragrance-free option of both the stick and deodorant jar.

Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant
To buy: $22; amazon.com
This clear deodorant was my favorite. The eucalyptus smells fresh, and the gel glides on easily without leaving a residue. I wore it for a long run, and afterward I still smelled fresh like eucalyptus, not B.O. It's also alcohol- and aluminum-free, so after shaving it didn't sting to apply—always a plus.
Fresh Sugar Roll-On Deodorant Antiperspirant
To buy: $19; nordstrom.com
This roll-on smells just like the other cult-favorite Fresh Sugar products. The fragrance is faintly sweet like natural sugar, not the overly syrupy smell I'm used to when things are described as smelling like sugar. The scent strikes the perfect balance of smelling slightly sweet but not cloying. As the name implies, the product is made with sugar, as well as oat kernel extract, witch hazel water, aloe leaf extract, and meadowsweet extract to soothe your skin and keep you dry at the same time. The product applied smoothly and absorbed quickly (something I worry about with liquid deodorants). When putting my shirt back on after my workout, I didn't have any tell-tale white deodorant stains on the inside, and the deodorant dried in record time.

Meow Meow Tweet Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream in Grapefruit
To buy: $18; amazon.com
This is the one I was most worried about trying. It comes in a cute little jar, and you have to apply a pea-sized amount with your fingers (!). But I loved it once I got over how weird it was to put it on with my hands, rather than an applicator. I tried the grapefruit scent, and it lasted all day, even after a 3-mile run.Meow Meow may be your best bet if you have sensitive skin. Many all-natural deodorants contain baking soda, which can irritate the underarms, but this version swaps it out for arrowroot powder and dietary magnesium to keep you dry, plus shea butter to moisturize.
Agent Nateur No. 3 Deodorant Holi (Stick)
To buy: $26; dermstore.com
With its simple and chic packaging (plus its edgy name), this deodorant is something I would display on my dresser. Scented with honey, lavender, and eucalyptus, it smells feminine without being overwhelming, making it a great choice if you're not a huge fragrance fan but still want a little hint of scent.
Arrow Protect Aluminum-Free Deodorant
To buy: $9; birchbox.com
The package might be small (perfect for keeping in your purse if you sweat a lot!), but this deodorant packs a huge dose of sweat protection. The bright citrus scent is pleasant and the tiny tube fit in the small pocket of my gym bag perfectly.
Weleda Citrus Deodorant Spray
To buy: $10; amazon.com
This non-aerosol spray felt almost like putting on a fragrance instead of a deodorant. The lemon scent was super fresh and easy to apply. I even spritzed some on my wrists for a mid-afternoon mood boost.

If You’re Going to Buy Lipstick This Fall, Make It One of These Hot Colors
If you typically associate red lips with fall, we have some exciting news: This season's hottest shades go way beyond the classic berry hue (although we love them, too). Think soft nudes, peppy pinks, and deep plums. Here, our favorite new shades to try now.
Velvety Nude
In rosy nudes (think your lips, but better). Spotted on the Herve Leger runway, the look is "universally flattering" says Troy Surratt, a makeup artist and the founder of an eponymous line. "It lets you fake fuller lips." He suggests using a lip-toned liner to draw a bit past your natural lip border, then topping with a liquid lipstick.
We like (from top): Bare Minerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Famous ($18, sephora.com); Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Dash ($16, nordstrom.com); Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Canvas ($20; sephora.com); Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lovesick ($20, sephora.com).
RELATED: The Best Concealers Under $10, According to Makeup Artists
Matte Plum
One swipe of this vampy hue will change your whole look. Make sure you're precise—dark lipsticks can get messy. "Prep with a lip balm," says Surratt. "Use a lip brush to apply color, then go in with a lip liner in the same shade to clean up edges."
We like (from top): Oribe Lip Lust Creme Lipstick in The Violet ($42, net-a-porter.com); Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Jawbreaker ($17, sephora.com); Burt's Bees Lipstick in Orchid Ocean ($9, amazon.com); Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour in An Affair ($28, lauramercier.com).
RELATED: The Most Wrinkle-Prone Cities in the U.S.
Glossy Red
A classic red lip is always chic, but this year's take is extra lovely thanks to its high shine factor. "Apply a matte red first," says Surratt, "to make the gloss on top look much stronger." Stash it in your bag; you'll need to reapply.
We like (from top): Essence BB Lipgloss in Heartbreaker ($4, essence.eu); YSL Vinyl Cream in N.411 Rhythm Red ($36, sephora.com); Cle De Peau Beaute Radiant Liquid Rouge in 17 ($48, nordstrom.com); MAC Versicolour Stain in Resilient Rouge ($25, amazon.com).

Creamy Pink
Bright pink in the fall? A thing! This hue wakes up any complexion. "Opt for one with coraly undertones," says Surratt. For a smoothing effect, use foundation as a base, then reapply lip color, advises makeup artist Sonia Kashuk, founder of Sonia Kashuk Beauty. "Blot color until it's a stain before adding the final layer," she adds.
We like (from top): Cover Girl Colorlicious Lipstick in Spellbound ($6, amazon.com); Lancome L'Absolu Rouge in 317, Pourquoi Pas ($32, nordstrom.com); Kiko Milano Gossamer Emotion Creamy Lipstick in Shade 124 ($12, kikocosmetics.com); Nuance Salma Hayek Moisture Rich Lipstick in Shocking Lotus Pink ($10; nuancesalmahayek.com).

Or DIY your own shade!
Mix these with your favorite lipsticks or apply on top for a unique color.
Blue lipstick leaves a violet cast. Try: Make Up For Ever in C602 ($22, sephora.com).
Green lipstick neutralizes warm hues. Try: Make Up For Ever in C601 ($22, sephora.com).
White lipstick lightens colors to turn them into the pastel version. Try: Maybelline New York The Loaded Bolds in Wicket White ($6, maybelline.com).
Black lipstick darkens, creating richness, dimension, and drama. Try: Maybelline New York The Loaded Bolds in Pitch Black ($6, ulta.com).

7 Concealers Makeup Artists Swear By
[brightcove:5480338449001 default]
Concealer: the life-changing beauty product that can bring you from Walking Dead status to walk-the-runway-ready in a couple of swipes. And as any woman who has ever tried to cover her dark circles or acne marks knows, concealer comes in so many formulas that it can be close to impossible to choose the right one. We went to the pros to find out what they consider to be the best of the best.
For full coverage: Cle de Peau Concealer ($70; nordstrom.com)
"This has full-coverage capability without a typical full-coverage heavy feel, and it doesn't settle into fine lines or wrinkles—a telltale sign that you've loaded up on concealer or foundation. The color range is vast and can complement many skin tones. A little goes a very long way, so it's worth the splurge!" —Lauren Gott, Los Angeles- and New York-based celebrity makeup artist; A-list clientele include Kiernan Shipka and Jewel

For sweat-proof coverage: Amazing Cosmetics Concealer ($42; dermstore.com)
"In my opinion, it's the best concealer out there and it has something for everyone. It comes in 20 shades and three families of undertones, making matching someone's skin tone perfectly a possibility. It's great for all-day wear and even held up against 14-hour dance days on the set of Smash!" —Rebecca Perkins, Co-founder and head makeup artist at Rouge New York

For a subtle sheen: Chanel Correcteur Perfection Long Lasting Concealer ($42; barneys.com)
"There are a ton of concealers I love, but this is my current go-to. If I'm just spot correcting, I match the concealer to complexion, or if I'm highlighting under the eyes, I choose a shade lighter than the skin tone I'm working with. It's an easy way to illuminate features without sparkle." —Joni Powell, Los Angeles based makeup artist who has worked on the sets of The O.C. and Hart of Dixie

For buildable coverage: TARTE Maracuja Creaseless Concealer ($25; sephora.com)
"It addresses so many of my clients' concerns: It provides full coverage without creasing, while also hydrating the eye area. On the rest of the face, I start with just a small amount of formula and build it up for more coverage. And an added bonus of TARTE's products is that they're natural and generally safe to use on all skin types." —Neil Scibelli, a New York-based celebrity makeup artist who has glammed up Molly Sims and Elle MacPherson

For a flawless finish: M.A.C. Studio Finish Concealer ($19; nordstrom.com)
"This is my all-time favorite. I like it because of its versatility and consistency—it never fails. It's a true medium- to full-coverage concealer, but can be used as thinly as any lightweight formula out there. Its easy to work with and very easy to blend smoothly. I always tell my closest friends, you don't really need foundation, you just need a really great concealer!" —New York City makeup artist Robert Greene, who has worked with Sienna Miller and Zoey Saldana
For a moisture boost: KOH GEN DO Moisture Concealer ($54; nordstrom.com)
"I love this palette because it's gentle, easy to apply, and has botanical ingredients that cover and neutralize the undereye skin and lids. It's a sheer formula that builds easily depending on if you use it under the eye or on skin imperfections." —New York city makeup artist Azara Red, who has worked with DKNY and Nicole Miller
For the undereye: Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer ($35; sephora.com)
This is my new favorite concealer. It's waterproof and humidity resistant. It blends well and has great coverage. I always pay attention to longevity of a product and the way it sets on the skin. I apply the creamy concealer in the morning using my ring finger in a gentle blotting motion to cover dark spots and imperfections. It sets nicely on the skin and does not emphasize any fine lines." —Kristine Cruz, makeup artist at Antonio Prieto Salon in New York City

6 Red Lipsticks Makeup Artists Swear By
Finding the perfect red lipstick can be something of a lifelong challenge. Just thinking about the different formulas, shades, and textures is enough to make someone go crazy! Cue makeup artists whose literal job it is to find and test said lipsticks. Here, the go-to reds that have proven worthy of a coveted spot in their kits.
For subtle color

Lipstick Queen Saint Sheer Lipstick in Rouge ($24; nordstrom.com)
If you're intimidated by sporting a rich color, Lipstick Queen has an amazing array of sheer and cream formulas so that you don't have to go for a bold look right off the bat. This one has the power to make you feel empowered, not intimidated. "It's not your typical red. It's a bit deeper but creates a flattering flush," says Rebecca Perkins, New York City makeup artist and co-founder of Rouge NY.
For high-shine

Avon Beyond Color Lipstick in Heat Wave ($5; avon.com)
"It's classic crimson that flatters all complexions and it has a satin finish that feels great. The formula is moisturizing and plumping!" says Lauren Andersen, Los Angeles celebrity makeup artist whose A-list clientele includes Jessica Alba, Jaime King and Eva Mendes.
For a younger looking pout

MAC 'The Matte' in Ruby Woo ($17; nordstrom.com)
"I always seem to return to this beautiful shade of blood red. It's a statement red and it stays on really well without bleeding into lip creases. A must-have for the more mature woman," says Silver Bramham, Los Angeles celebrity makeup artist who has counted Kate Moss, Amber Valletta and Jane Fonda as clients.
For a vintage look
Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Color in Pirate ($36; nordstrom.com)
"I love this one for its classic satin finish. It has a touch of luminousness that gives gorgeous depth. I've used this shade on Brittany Snow and she looked oh-so-retro!" says Brett Freedman, Hollywood makeup artist who has worked with Camilla Belle, Reba Mcentire and Amy Poehler.
For a sophisticated red
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in "Cruella" ($26; sephora.com)
"This deeper scarlet is a good red to have for every occasion, very modern and chic. I love the formula because it feels silky and light on your lips, almost like you have nothing on," says Andra Tiller, New York City celebrity makeup artist who has glammed up Amy Schumer, Allison Williams and Olivia Palermo.
For the perfect fiery red

Tom Ford in Wild Ginger ($52; nordstrom.com)
"I like a more poppy, orange-based shade of red. This one suits many skin tones, from light to dark, and is the best texture and finish. It can also be layered over a deeper shade of a matte red for a more intensified full looking lip," says April Greaves, New York City makeup artist who has worked on advertising campaigns for Athleta, Barneys New York and Intermix.

8 Mascaras Top Celebrity Makeup Artists Swear By
Long, thick, fluttery lashes aren’t just reserved for the stars. In fact, the tools the pros use aren't different than what you can find online, at your favorite department store, or even at the drugstore! Here, the pros behind Hollywood’s top looks reveal the formulas they use. Get the celeb (lash) treatment with these tried-and-true picks.
For everyday definition

Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara ($28; sephora.com)
“This is my go-to for an everyday look. It makes lashes appear full and feathery. To apply, hold the wand like a toothbrush and wiggle it from left to right to separate hairs, then sweep the brush outwards,” says Sir John, a celebrity makeup artist for L’Oréal Paris and the one responsible for the flawless faces of Beyoncé, Karlie Kloss, and Joan Smalls.
For noticeable length

Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real Lengthening & Volumizing Mascara ($24; sephora.com)
“The formula is buildable and the brush separates as you comb through, so you can get major length without that bulky or clumpy look. Two or three coats are all you need," says Pati Dubroff, a Los Angeles makeup artist whose A-list following includes Naomi Watts, Dakota Johnson and Rosie Huntington Whiteley.
For blackest black lashes

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara ($6; amazon.com)
“The Carbon Black shade goes on pitch black, never grayish, and you can really pile it on layer by layer for tons of volume that doesn’t clump or flake off. Plus, it’s cheap!” says Joanna Simkin, a New York City makeup artist who works with songstresses Leona Lewis and Nicki Minaj.
For max volume

Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes 5 Star Mascara ($29; nordstrom.com)
“I’m a mascara obsessive. I used to cocktail up to five to create the effect I desired—curl, length, volume and separation. That’s why I created Full Fat Lashes—it does it all! Apply using a zigzag motion from root to tip for major drama. The five-grooved brush will deposit rich pigment right down to the root,” says Charlotte Tilbury, a Los Angeles makeup artist whose clients include Kate Moss, Blake Lively and Jennifer Aniston.
For corner-to-corner coverage

Maybelline New York Lash Discovery Mini Brush Waterproof Mascara ($7; amazon.com)
“The tiny brush allows me to get to the very base of lashes, making it especially great for blondes. You can easily get the baby hairs in the corner and on the bottom, too. I gently pull up the eyelid to access the roots and comb through, sweeping the lashes toward the outer corner of the eye. The waterproof formula instantly locks the curl into place,” says Brian Duprey, a New York City makeup artist who has counted Kristen Bell, Rachel Bilson and Andie MacDowell as clients.
For a subtle pop of color

Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Rouge Noir ($32; nordstrom.com)
“It’s a pretty substitution for your basic black mascara. The color is a deep plum shade that looks great on everyone and doesn’t smudge. I especially love to apply it on the bottom lashes for a bright-eyed look,” says Kayleen McAdams, a Los Angeles celebrity makeup artist who glams up Sophia Vergara, Leighton Meester and Rachel McAdams.
For a lifted lash (sans a curler)

Eyeko Black Magic Mascara ($24; nordstrom.com)
“This mascara is like magic! The creamy formula thickens and lengthens, and the rounded brush is the perfect size and shape to grab every little hair. Starting at the base, roll the brush up to lift lashes for a really pretty, wide-eyed look,” says Tomy Rivero, a New York City and Los Angeles makeup artist who works with TV stars like Barbara Corcoran.
For a falsie look

YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils ($32; sephora.com)
“It’s the best for getting those inky black, almost doll-like lashes you’ve been seeing on the runway. The plush brush coats every single lash—even the wimpiest ones—in this luscious formula that isn’t gunky or drying,” says Suzy Gerstein, a New York City makeup artist whose clients include Christy Turlington and Julie Bowen.

This 10-Year-Old Boy Needs Three Organ Transplants—and You Can Help
Meet Noah.
He'll be 10 years old on August 10, 2018. And he'll celebrate another milestone that day: fighting cystic fibrosis for a decade, a condition he was diagnosed with at five months old. Medical obstacles began around his second birthday and have been frequent ever since, with the worst-of-the-worst issues starting around a few weeks ago.
In addition to the gravity of this disease, he's also battling liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension and esophageal varices, causing him to need a triple-orange transplant. This includes a new liver and new lungs.
While the severity of his current state is difficult to stomach and imagine, he has two superstar women fighting in his corner: his great aunt, Tabitha McFall and his aunt, Victoria McFall. Due to recent complications that have impeded the process of getting on the transplant list, this courageous twosome decided to start a fundraising and social media campaign to ensure they're financially prepared for the next steps in his battle. As of press, it has raised $65,000 of their $75,000 goal.
As Tabitha explains, once the current infections in his lungs have healed, he'll begin the pricey process of moving forward. "While this is being resolved, the plan is to take him to surgery every four weeks to prevent any life-threatening GI bleeds. And if he does have the bleeds, he gets blood transfusions, which require him to be flown from Asheville to Chapel Hill to stop them." They'll make another flight the moment they receive a call there is a donor available.
Why so many complications? Victoria explains his particular case of cystic fibrosis is to blame. She says many of his issues are so rare, the National Institute of Health has taken him on as a case study to examine his conditions. While Noah is a special case, allergist, internist and chief medical officer of EHE Dr. Tania Elliott says cystic fibrosis happens in 1 of every 2 to 3,000 births, making it one of the most common genetic diseases impacting children. "The disease makes you predisposed to infection, and leads to an inability to clear mucous, which also becomes very thick. Your body also produces sweat that is very high in chloride levels, which is how the disease is diagnosed," she explains. "The major organs affected are the lungs and sinuses, and people are very susceptible to certain kinds of bacterial infections. It can also impact the liver, pancreas, musculoskeletal system, the gut, and cause blood clots. The degree of the illness depends on what genetic mutation you have."
