Prehistoric Women Had Stronger Arms Than Competitive Rowers Today
[brightcove:5569684893001 default]
This article originally appeared on Time.com.
Today’s athletes may be strong, but they’ve got nothing on prehistoric women who spent their days harvesting crops and grinding grain. According to a new study in the journal Science Advances, the average woman who lived during the first 6,000 years of farming had stronger upper arms than modern-day female rowing champions.
The study “highlights the scale of women’s labor in prehistoric agricultural communities, and the hidden history of women’s work across thousands of years of farming,” says study author Alison Macintosh, a postdoctoral anthropology researcher at the University of Cambridge in the UK.
Previous research has compared women’s bones to men’s of the same era, the authors write in their study. But male bones respond to strain in a more visibly dramatic way than female bones, they explain, which has caused scientists to underestimate the true nature and scale of the physical work done by women in prehistoric societies.
In this study, researchers used a CT scanner to analyze the arm and leg bones of living women, and compared them to those of Central European women who lived between 7,400 and 3,500 years ago—a time period that included early Neolithic agricultural eras into the Middle Ages. The living women were selected to represent a range of physical activity levels and included runners, rowers, soccer players and people with more sedentary lifestyles.
The researchers found that the early Neolithic skeletons (women who lived between 7,400 and 7,000 years ago) had leg bones of similar strength to today’s female athletes. But even when compared with women on Cambridge’s championship rowing team, the prehistoric women’s arms were 11-16% stronger for their size. They were also 30% stronger than the arms of the non-athletes analyzed in the study.
Women from the Bronze Age (4,300 to 3,500 years ago) had 9-13% stronger arm bones than today’s rowers, but they also had 12% weaker leg bones.
The researchers suspect that the early women’s superior arm strength came from the daily work they likely put in tilling soil, harvesting crops by hand and grinding grain to make flour. “For millennia, grain would have been ground by hand between two large stones called a saddle quern,” says Macintosh. “In the few remaining societies that still use saddle querns, women grind grain for up to five hours a day.”
Women were also likely involved in fetching food and water for livestock, processing milk and meat and converting animal hides and wool into textiles—evidenced by the variety of different behavior patterns reflected in their bones. Prior to the invention of the plough, the authors say, they also spent time manually planting, tilling and harvesting crops.
“By interpreting women’s bones in a female-specific context, we can start to see how intensive, variable and laborious their behaviors were,” says Macintosh. Comparing their bone characteristics to living people—whose exercise levels are known—also provides a better understanding of the real amount of physical activity these women got on a regular basis. (The Cambridge rowers, for example, trained twice a day and rowed an average of 75 miles a week.)
“It can be easy to forget that bone is a living tissue, one that responds to the rigors we put our bodies through,” Macintosh adds. Bone reacts and adapts to strain—like physical impact and muscle activity—by changing in shape, curvature, thickness and density.
MORE: Why Weight Training Is Ridiculously Good For You
Bone strength is affected by factors other than behavior, Macintosh says, including genetics, nutrition and overall health. These differences between prehistoric and modern women could affect some of the results, she says, although behavior “is still likely to be responsible for the bulk of these differences that we’re seeing.”
“Our study suggests that this labor was likely more rigorous and intensive than what is required of most living rowers in their sport,” says Macintosh. “Our work also highlights the huge variability in the daily activities of women, giving us a wider appreciation of the scale and variability of things that women were likely doing in their daily lives.”
In today’s industrialized societies, strenuous physical activity is less common and easier to avoid, Macintosh adds—and for the human species as a whole, bone strength and mobility have suffered because of it. The study serves as an important reminder, she says, about the importance of exercise—recreational or otherwise, and for men and women alike—for building and maintaining healthy bones.

Pizza Hut Puts Vegan Pies on the Menu
[brightcove:4928980311001 default]
This article originally appeared on FoodAndWine.com.
Part of the appeal of fast food is that it’s not supposed to be healthy. It’s flavored with grease and salt and fat and butter. Unless you count potatoes and shredded lettuce, vegetables usually don’t appear on the tray. It’s an indulgence, a guilty pleasure, a dirty secret. And it tastes good. Everyone should be able to enjoy that feeling of satisfaction when you bite into a juicy burger, straight off the grill, or a greasy slice of pizza topped with cheese that tastes it through it was squeezed through a tube, even vegans. Pizza Hut seems to agree, because starting tomorrow in the United Kingdom, the chain is adding vegan pies to its menu.
Pizza Hut’s vegan pies will use a type of fake cheese called Violife. The brand includes products like “Just Like Mature Cheddar” and “Just Like Smoked Provolone” in its line of dairy alternatives, according to Grub Street. The chain tested its vegan pizza in England for about two months but warned that it would only become a permanent menu item if there was high customer demand—which apparently there was. Who knew there were so many pizza-hungry vegans in England?
“After an amazing customer response to our vegan cheese trial earlier this year, we’re pleased to announce that the dairy-free alternative will now be served in all of our restaurants nationwide and feature as a permanent fixture on our menus,” Gareth Hopley, Head of Communications at Pizza Hut Restaurants, said in a statement reported by Metro UK.
Violife will cost an extra £1 to add to your Pizza Hut pie and, for now, you can only try it in the United Kingdom, but perhaps if it’s a big enough hit there, the U.S. will adopt the new menu item, too.
Don’t be surprised by the sudden popularity of the snack: Vegans love junk food, too, and they want to be included in the fast food market. So what if they don’t eat animal products? That doesn’t mean they have to be healthy all the time. In Finland, McDonald’s is testing a vegan burger, not to mention the current craze to develop the perfect, bleeding “impossible burger.” And if you’re looking for a healthy pizza alternative here in the U.S., you might try California Pizza Kitchen, which, though not entirely vegan, has introduced cauliflower crust on some of its pies.

The 15-Minute Home Workout to Survive the Holidays
[brightcove:5523727483001 default]
This article originally appeared on DailyBurn.com.
For most, the holiday season means a whole lot of travel, food and to-dos…and little time, space or energy for exercise. But your fitness doesn’t have to take a backseat to a packed seasonal schedule — and this home workout, made up of just five exercises (all from Daily Burn 365), is proof.
The total-body bodyweight routine is low-impact, so you won’t bother others by jumping around. And you don’t need any equipment, either. Plus, you’ll target multiple muscles in each efficient move, working your body from top to bottom along the way. All you need is 15 minutes and a space the size of an exercise mat. Follow along pre- or post-feasting with the fam — or better yet, both.

The Home Workout You Need This Holiday Season
Perform each combination exercise below in order for 40 seconds each. Rest for 20 seconds between each exercise — or skip the breather and keep going if you have the stamina. Repeat the circuit at least twice for three total rounds.

Mom Who Killed Disabled Daughter with Medication Overdose Commits Suicide
This article originally appeared on People.com.
The terminally ill Illinois mother convicted in 2016 of killing her severely disabled daughter because she feared what would happen to the 28-year-old after her death committed suicide on Saturday, PEOPLE confirms.
Bonnie Liltz, 57, of Schaumberg, was found dead in her home Saturday evening after family members called 911, Sgt. Christy Lindhurst of the Schaumberg Police Department tells PEOPLE. Her death is “believed to be a suicide,” says Lindhurst, adding that there is no evidence of foul play.
Authorities are awaiting an autopsy and toxicology test results, she says.
In 2016, Liltz was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the 2015 death of her daughter, who suffered from cerebral palsy. She was sentenced to four years in prison.
Liltz, who suffered from terminal cancer and other health issues, told authorities that because her health was deteriorating rapidly, she feared she would soon die. In 2015, she gave herself and her daughter Courtney a lethal dose of drugs because she was afraid no one would be able to care for her daughter. Courtney died from the overdose but Liltz survived.
Even though prosecutors had recommended probation, in 2016, Cook County Judge Joel Greenblatt sentenced her to prison, saying, “The choice you made that morning was not an act of love. It was a crime.”
Later in 2016, a judge set her free on bond during her appeal after she had served about three months of the sentence, WGN9 reported.
In October, the Illinois Supreme Court denied her appeal. She was scheduled to return to prison on Monday to complete her four-year sentence.
Liltz took her own life because she believed she would die in prison without the proper medical care she needed, her attorney, Glasgow, tells PEOPLE. “She did leave a note to me and to the other attorneys who had worked with her saying she knew she was going to die if she went back to prison and couldn’t bear to die there,” he says.
Plagued by incontinence issues because of a perforated bladder and bowel from previous radiation treatments for ovarian cancer that destroyed her intestines, Liltz’s health deteriorated rapidly in prison, says Glasgow.
On Saturday, Liltz told her mother she was going to a movie and lunch with a friend. Instead, she wrote out suicide notes to family and friends and swallowed an overdose of pills, WLS-TV reports.

Cinnamon Has a Surprising Health Benefit
[brightcove:5305659817001 default]
This article originally appeared on Time.com.
If you love cinnamon, add an extra shake to your next meal: new research shows that the popular spice boosts metabolism in mouse and human fat cells.
In the new study, published in the journal Metabolism, researchers from the University of Michigan tested the effect of cinnamaldehyde—the essential oil that gives cinnamon its flavor—on fat cells taken from mice, as well as fat cells from four humans.
They found that exposure to cinnamon oil triggered both the mouse and the human cells to start burning calories through a process known as thermogenesis. A closer look showed that the oil increased the activity of several genes, enzymes and proteins that are known to enhance fat metabolism.
Fat cells, also called adipocytes, normally store energy in the form of lipids. From an evolutionary standpoint, that stored energy can be used by the body during periods of food shortage, or converted to heat during colder months.
But in a society where food and heat are relatively plentiful, stored energy often has nowhere to go and can contribute to unwanted weight gain. Study author Jun Wu, research assistant professor at the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute, says that consuming cinnamon on a regular basis may be one way to make fat cells burn some of that energy, rather than storing all of it.
The study looked at cinnamon’s effects on adipocytes directly—not on an actual human bodies—so much more research is needed to know if cinnamon has the same effect in real people and what the implications of increased thermogenesis really are. And while cinnamon is considered safe in quantities normally used in food, Wu says it’s still too early to determine an effective dose.
MORE: Why Cinnamon Is Insanely Good For You
Wu says that a sprinkle of cinnamon here or there may not be enough to show immediate, measurable effects on metabolism. However, “we speculate that you don’t have to eat a large amount of cinnamon all at once,” she says. “If you eat it every day, we suspect there will be a cumulative effect, and that over time you will achieve these benefits.”
This isn’t the first study to suggest that cinnamon may have beneficial effects on the body’s metabolic processes. Other research has found that the spice appears to protect mice against obesity and hyperglycemia, and that it’s associated with lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
Wu says that her team’s research is another piece of evidence in cinnamon’s favor. “After this, I would recommend eating a little more than you do already,” she says. “If you already eat a lot of it, carry on—and if it’s not something you use regularly, it’s a great time to start.”

Achieve Your Dream Eyebrows With These 3 Steps
[brightcove:4885662898001 default]
Plan your shape
Using an ultrafine liner (try Benefit Cosmetics Precisely My Brow Eyebrow Pencil, $24, sephora.com), make three dots: Mark the start, directly above the dimple in your nose; the arch, angled out from the edge of your nostril; and the tail end, 45 degrees from the edge of your nose and a bit past where your natural brow ends. (This is Benefit’s technique of brow mapping.)
RELATED: How I Grew My Eyebrows Back After Years of Over-Tweezing
Pencil it in
Using the dots as your guide, draw tiny strokes with the liner. Light pressure is the key to avoiding a stenciled-on appearance; letting a little skin peek through looks more natural. (If you don’t have any major bare patches, you can skip this step and go straight to step 3.)
Bulk it up
For fullness, use a gel with tiny hairlike fibers (we like Maybelline New York Eye Studio Brow Precise Fiber Volumizer, $9, target.com). Brush toward your nose—in the opposite direction of hair growth—and then brush back. This technique (similar to teasing hair) results in thicker and more believable brows.

Is Loud Music in Workout Classes Bad for Your Ears?
[brightcove:5599161751001 default]
That cranked-up stereo definitely isn’t great for your ears. Adults can safely bear a noise dose of less than 85 decibels for eight hours a day, per the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. And the max amount of time shrinks quickly the louder the noise gets. For instance, adults can tolerate 94 decibels for only one hour before it becomes potentially damaging to their hearing. And the music in some workout classes these days is blasted as loud as 99 decibels, a recent study found.
RELATED: Got Ringing in Your Ears? Here's How to Cope With Tinnitus
That probably won’t tear you away from your favorite class, which is likely only an hour or less. But next time, see if you notice any ringing or buzzing in your ears (a.k.a. tinnitus) after class. If you do, I suggest you start wearing earplugs to prevent any long-term or permanent hearing loss. Earplugs will only muffle the noise, so you should still be able to hear the music. Some studios offer earplugs to clients for free (ask at the front desk), or you can pick up a pack at the drugstore and stash them in your gym bag. And don’t forget to watch the volume if you’re working out on your own and listening to music with headphones. As a rule, if someone near you can hear the music through your headphones, it’s too loud.

Janet Jackson Lost 70 Pounds Without Doing Any Cardio
[brightcove:4852300216001 default]
This article originally appeared on InStyle.com.
Janet Jackson is looking better than ever. Not only did the 51-year-old star recently welcome a baby girl, Eissa, she also is in the best shape of her life.
If you think she's been pounding the treadmill or doing some intense spin classes, think again. The famous singer and her trainer devised an entirely new workout plan, and she's lost 70 lbs. without doing any cardio. While still rigorous—they worked out together four times a week for a minimum of 45 minutes—the intense training skipped exercises that tend to be hard on the body.
"We were doing three or four exercises with weights back to back," Jackson's trainer Paulette Sybliss told E! News. "What that does—you would look at her and think she'd done like an hour of cardio with me—but when you're working with weights and you're working the muscle that way, it elevates the heart rate, but also it's creating that fat burning affect both during the session and also when she left me, and that was key."

While their initial goal was to lose weight, they're now focusing maintaining her figure and staying healthy. "We're not looking to lose any weight whatsoever," Sybliss continued. "She looks incredible and she's so fit, but she's also healthy."
Despite her focus on staying in incredible shape, Jackson also makes sure to treat herself occasionally. "If Janet feels that she needs to have a chocolate cake, go ahead and have a chocolate cake. You're not eating it every day. You won't get fat overnight."

You don’t always need tons of equipment to get a heart-pumping, sweat-dripping workout. And you don’t even need many moves. With a little help from celeb trainer Bob Harper (and his Daily Burn workout program, Black Fire), you can get a serious cardio workout in just three exercises — no treadmill, elliptical or bike required. The secret to seeing results while still keeping it simple: working hard and moving fast, without sacrificing form. So step off the machine to step up your stamina with this quick cardio workout you can do anywhere. It’s time to test your limits.

Bob Harper’s 3-Move Cardio Workout
Each exercise below works your entire body — cardiorespiratory system included. Start with a three- to five-minute warm-up and then get moving. Aim to perform this workout as a ladder, doing one rep of each exercise on the first round, two on the second, three on the third, and so on. See how many reps of each move you can complete in 20 minutes. If you repeat the workout another day, try to beat that number — because a little friendly competition with yourself offers some real motivation. Take a breather when you need it, but keep in mind: The harder you push, the more calories you burn. Ready, set, sweat!

1. Wide Mountain Climbers
How to: Get in a high plank position, with your hands on the ground or on a box or chair in front of you. You should form a straight line from shoulders to hips to ankles (a). Step or jump your right foot to the outside of your right hand (b). Using your abs, lift your hips and jump to switch your feet so your right leg goes back to plank position and your left foot steps to the outside of your left hand (c). Continue alternating.

2. Dumbbell Swings
How to: Start with feet just a little wider than hip-width apart. Hold a medium to heavy dumbbell with both hands down in front of you (a). Inhale and hinge at the hips, lean forward with a flat back and bend your knees slightly as you bring the dumbbell between your legs (b). Using the power of your glutes and hamstrings, exhale and thrust your hips forward to bring the dumbbell straight up overhead as you straighten your legs. Make sure you engage your abs to stand upright at the top — don’t lean backward (c). Let the dumbbell naturally come back down and between your legs (d). Repeat.

Then place them back down, in line with your shoulders (d). Push yourself back up to the top of a plank, keeping your body in a straight line. Don’t round or arch your back (e). Repeat.

This Type of Alcohol Makes You Feel Sexy, According to Science
[brightcove:5476832773001 default]
This article originally appeared on Time.com.
If you’re trying to wind down after a long day, wine may help you relax, a new study suggests. But if you’re more in the mood to feel sexy and confident, order spirits instead.
A group of researchers in the U.K. set out to determine whether different types of alcohol prompt different emotional responses among drinkers. They used data from almost 30,000 people who responded to the Global Drug Survey, a yearly international poll about drug and alcohol habits around the world, and published their results in the British Medical Journal.
Spirits — like vodka, gin, whiskey and other hard alcohols — were linked to a range of strong feelings. They were most likely bring up negative feelings, such as aggression (in 30% of people), restlessness (28%) and tearfulness (22%). But they were also most likely to spur some positive emotions, including feeling energized (58%), confident (59%) and sexy (42%).
People who drank red wine and beer, on the other hand, were more likely to report feeling relaxed. Almost 53% of people said they felt relaxed after drinking wine, and almost 50% did after having beer. Red wine, more than white wine or any other type of alcohol, was most commonly associated with fatigue, making 60% of drinkers feel tired.
MORE: It’s True: Alcohol Helps You Speak a Foreign Language Better
The drinks may be linked to different emotions because of variations in alcohol percentages, ingredients and the amounts typically consumed, the researchers speculate. Advertising and cultural implications related to the beverages may also play a role.
All of the emotions studied were more commonly reported among female drinkers than male drinkers, except for aggression. People ages 18 to 24 and those who drank heavily also reported more emotions, both positive and negative, after consuming alcohol. The responses also varied somewhat by geographic area and socioeconomic status.
The findings also suggest that, whether they realize it or not, people may be choosing their drinks based on their emotional state or how they expect a certain beverage to make them feel.
“These findings suggest that individuals inadvertently select drinks which are known to elicit negative emotions because they crave the positive emotions that go with them and link with existing evidence that those dependent on alcohol drink alcohol as a coping mechanism rather than drinking for pleasure,” the authors write in the paper.

These Are the Healthiest Fast Food Salads to Order
[brightcove:5480008594001 default]
This article originally appeared on HelloGiggles.com.
For the food-obsessed (and particularly those that seek out healthier fare), traveling can leave you feeling “meh” about mealtimes. We’re talking about the actual act of traveling—via trains, planes, and automobiles—where you’re often grabbing something quick at the airport or train station, or pulling over at a highway rest stop.
There are so many choices out there, but finding a fast food meal that’s both delicious and healthy-ish can be a challenge. We were curious and wanted answers—and, of course, we wanted to help you, too. So we honed in on salads, which tend to have a health halo (meaning they seem healthy, but can be stealthily high in calories and sodium).
We rounded up the salad menus from a handful of the top national fast food chains. We compared nutrition numbers, refined our list, and then went through their drive-thrus to sample the salads for ourselves. There were, of course, some losers, but we successfully found some clear winners: as in healthy, delicious, salads that—yes—we, the Cooking Light dietitians, would order while on the road.
Overall Winner: Chick-Fil-A Grilled Market Salad: The fresh apples and blueberries, crunchy Harvest Nut Granola, and grilled chicken helped this salad stand out and clinch the top spot on our list.
Nutrition info: Calories 330; Fat 14g (sat 2.5g); Protein 27g; Carb 26g; Fiber 6g; Sugars 12g; Sodium 670mg; Vitamin A 240% DV
Runner Up #1: Wendy’s Apple Pecan Chicken Salad: Fresh, juicy apples and tasty candied pecans really made this salad. Oftentimes fast food grilled chicken is ho-hum, but the grilled chicken on this one was among the best of the bunch. The sodium is a bit high in this salad (44% of your daily limit), but this salad has the least sodium compared to the others on the Wendy’s menu.
Nutrition info (for the full size): Calories 560; Fat 24g (sat 7g); Protein 38g; Carb 52g; Fiber 7g; Sugars 40g; Sodium 1020mg; Potassium 23% DV; Vitamin A 100% DV
Runner Up #2: McDonald’s Southwest Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Salad: This salad had lots of flavor thanks to the Southwestern vegetable blend (corn, beans, pepper) and chili lime tortilla strips (that were reminiscent of Doritos). And, surprisingly, ordering the crispy chicken instead of grilled saves you sodium and gives you more fiber.
Nutrition info: Calories 520; Fat 25g (sat 6g); Protein 28g; Carb 46g; Fiber 8g; Sugars 9g; Sodium 960mg; Vitamin A 180% DV
